Surgery is booked…

Jonty’s surgery has now been booked for Monday September 2nd, and I had a lump in my throat when I got off of the phone to the vet.

I was worrying yesterday about whether this is the right thing – he can run and play on his leg, and he seems to use it quite well. How could we be sure? But then we took the tribe for a long off-lead walk at the salt lakes near our home. Jonty started out skittering around the other dogs, putting on little bouts of speed and generally doing the puppy thing. After a short distance, though, he lost his sense of puppy fun and we could see he was having trouble keeping up. His ears were laid flat back while he concentrated on putting one foot in front of the other, but he was determined to walk. He made one half of the journey on his own feet.  On the way back, we carried him, and he fretted and wriggled and jealously watched the others running and playing.

So now I believe we are doing the right thing – I am sure once he is back on his own three feet he will find it easier to keep up and to run and play when he isn’t dealing with a twisted leg with no proper elbow joint.

I’m pretty sure I might still have to shed some tears for this little one when I get home tonight, now it’s all final. That’s okay – I know some good times are headed our way too.

The second guessing part is normal and you’ll find yourself doing it several more times!

We’ll be thinking of Johnty over the weekend and especially on Monday. Take care.

Jony will do amazing on 3 legs… and he does’t have to cope with any of that nasty cancer so he should live a wonderful long life as one of the cutest tripawds around!!! You will be amazed at how well they do!!

My heart would break too seeing the little guy trying to catch up…. and he was probably tiring because he was trying to use his bum leg.. without that leg.. he doesn’t exert his energy to using it.. and he will do just fine!

One tip of dealing with a Tripawd.. is get throw rugs if you don’t have them… bare floors are slippery on three legs..

and.. I know how hard it is to keep them confined in the beginning of the healing process, but try not to let him get too crazy.. he has all those nerves, and blood vessels that need to heal.. that was the biggest thing my vet was concerned about.. we didn’t want anything to break on the inside..

and please.. keep us posted!!! and pictures!! we all love pictures.. :O)

Of course it’s a scarey time and you’ll be second guessing off and on the next few days….and the probavly a few days during the actual recover. But when you start to see how well he’s doing…and will continue to do…oh yeah! Great decision!

The thing is …even though he appears to mansge…down the road there would be tons of issues constantly cropping up as a resulte of that leg. It doesn’t mean that you won’t have a y issues with the amp as Jonty ages…..arthritis, sore joints, etc…but all that’s managed with preventive care…supplememts…not a lot of crazy jumping, etc.

Get some sleep now…..the first couple of days you may be up and down with him some.

Is he staying overnight and is it a 24 hr. care facility? Most all dogs here stay one ight.-.some two.

You are not alone!!!!! We are here right by your side! Look forward to folowingthis incredible journey of joy!

Aww Baby Jonty, you will be at your fullest puppy craziness in no time. I’m sorry you have to go through the surgery but you’ll do great, I just know it. Hang in there little one, you’ll be running circles around that pack!

    Jonty,

Trio and I will be honking of you. Trio had a deformed front leg and we kept it. And the. It broke and he was pain and we had to amputate. I wish at times we had amputated earlier. But then I know it is all part of his soptory.

    Good luck Jonty!
